Psalms – Inspired Music

The Psalms were not written to be read quietly and set aside.

They were written to be sung — to move from the page into the voice, from the voice into the body, from the body into the places that prose alone cannot reach. Israel sang them on the way up to Jerusalem. They sang them in the Temple courts. They sang them in exile, in the night, in the valley, in grief that had not yet found its shape. The Psalms are the oldest and most complete songbook the people of God ever received, and they were always meant to be in the mouth, not only in the mind.
